Our landscape projects portfolio

We are proud of our landscape projects

Innovative outdoor learning environments for schools and playgrounds revitalised with the ambient energies of nature!

We have a wide diversity of projects, features and elements going back over 20 years.  When Leaves of Green started, our aim was to establish a comprehensive portfolio of positive and practical precedents for schools, councils and private clients.

Below are three examples of particular projects. Scroll down further to see our extensive portfolio of design and installation work.

Hampden Street Outdoor Learning Environment

We worked with the school community to come up with a design for a multifuctional outdoor learning area. Then, during July to September 2018, we worked with 200 children to install the project.

Effective outdoor learning at Hampden Street School

We transformed an area in the centre of the school to create a beautiful space for class activities and social engagement.  Some existing mature deciduous trees allowed the introduction of a New Zealand rain forest understorey of ground covers and ferns.  There is a storytelling circle; a long table for art work and display; a seating area for small group activities; and a central circular area of Tiger Turf for circle games, performance and relaxing.

The completed project has had a multitude of positive comments, in particular from the children themselves.  Most of the work was done during the winter term, and Don McLean (Principal) and Simon Ashby were really behind getting the children involved in the construction.  We probably worked with 200 children over the 2 months we were on site, digging, raking, lifting, shoveling, planting - a great time was had by all, and a sense of real ownership and pride in a shared endeavour was created.

Tahunanui School landscape masterplan

We worked with the school community to realise a holistic vision for connectivity, learning, play and positive community relations

Climbing Frame: first project 2016

The climbing frame was a feature item chosen as the first installation project and it gives fine views over the school during the day, and is a focal hub for end of day collections - plus great climbing and skills development.  We project managed this and worked with the Corrections department to install a value for money ground surface and seating layout.

"The climbing frame looks fantastic, kids playing on it and having a great time, with parents sitting around chatting. It’s stunning!! Thank you so much for getting this done, I REALLY appreciate it."   Feedback text from Principal

Entrance enhancement 2018 and continuing....

The beginnings of updating the entrances came next.  Early 2018 saw a  'beach style' sand play area installed, featuring a shade structure of naturally durable and local Robinia timbers, Kanuka roof battens, Murchison river boulders and native coastal plants.

Another entrance to the school enhanced the native forest environment, and added macrocarpa panels for a school art work project that will happen in 2018.

It is intended to start the major infrastructure work identified in the masterplan this year.  Watch this space for further developments.

Blakedown School 2004-2010

We created an adventure play area with the children of the school; put in some essential connectivity and infrastructure; and planted some fine specimen trees to develop the sense of place.

Transforming grass into multi functional creative places

Between 2004 and 2009 we worked with the good folk of Blakedown School.  Their site had no connectivity linking the drop off car park to the school buildings; and the huge grass field had no particular sense of purpose.  We added a main footpath enhanced with a blue cedar avenue, built a formal timber structure as a focal point, and set about working with Hilary, Joel and the children to design a creative play area with an arboretum of interesting trees.  The basis of the design was to create a medieval village, with maypoles and village dwellings set among maturing trees.  The photos below show some 'before and afters' of certain areas.

Hilary Pritchard, Headteacher.

"Working with Guy was easy. He has vision and understanding of how to enhance an environment. He also has clear ideas of how to develop land for the benefit of a community. Guy and his team at leaves of green worked long hours to ensure that deadlines were met and the price quoted for the job was the sum paid on completion. All stakeholders at Blakedown CE Primary School have been delighted with the improvements made to the school grounds and look forward to leaves of green’s return at some time in the future."
